Rohit Vemula Death Case: The Telangana Director General of Police has said that they will conduct a further inquiry into the death of University of Hyderabad PhD researcher Rohith Vemula in January 2016, just days after the state police filed a closure report in the case. Vemula, according to police, was not a Dalit and committed himself in 2016 out of concern that his “real caste” would be found.

In response to concerns voiced by Vemula’s family, the Telangana Director General of Police has issued a statement affirming their commitment to conduct a more extensive investigation into the case.

As the mother and others of the deceased, Rohit Vemula, have expressed concerns about the investigation, it has been decided to conduct more investigations into the case. A petition will be submitted in the appropriate court, seeking that the Hon’ble Magistrate allow additional inquiry into the case,” according to the DGP’s statement.

DGP Ravi Gupta stated that the final report in the case was compiled in 2018 and was officially filed to the jurisdictional court on March 21, 2024. -Rohit Vemula Death Case

“It should be noted that the investigation into the case was conducted by the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Madhapur. The final closure report in the case was compiled last year, specifically before November 2023, based on the findings of the investigation,” he elaborated.

Vemula Raja, the brother of Rohith Vemula, also stated that the DGP will reopen the investigation. “We have submitted a representation to the CM, who has assured us of a thorough and transparent investigation to ensure justice for Rohith Vemula. We trust that the Congress government will indeed reopen the case,” expressed Vemula Raja.

Rohith Vemula, a PhD scholar at the University of Hyderabad, was discovered hanging from a ceiling fan in a hostel room on January 17, 2016. It is purported that he was distressed by disciplinary measures enacted by the university.

Former BJP MLC N Ramchander Rao, who is implicated in the 2016 Rohith Vemula suicide case, has alleged that the Congress and Left parties sought to exploit the situation for political gain.

On Friday, a group of students demonstrated at the University of Hyderabad, raising chants against the BJP, Union Minister Smriti Irani, and former university vice-chancellor Appa Rao Podile, who was also among the accused.

The Students’ Federation of India (SFI) said in a social media post that the police closure report “on Rohith Vemula’s institutional murder is an exercise in irony”.

The Congress government and its police are supporting the false narrative of the BJP by tagging Rohith not to be a Dalit despite lack of proof of the same, the statement said.
