Rajiv Gandhi: Today, on the 33rd anniversary of Rajiv Gandhi’s passing, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid his respects to the former Prime Minister.

Prime Minister Modi tweeted on X, My tributes to our former PM Shri Rajiv Gandhi Ji on his death anniversary.

On Tuesday morning, at Veer Bhumi in Delhi, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, and party MP Rahul Gandhi joined together to pay homage to Rajiv Gandhi on his 33rd death anniversary. With somber reverence, they commemorated the profound legacy of the former Prime Minister, acknowledging his enduring influence on the nation. As they laid wreaths and offered prayers, their presence symbolized the ongoing reverence and respect for Rajiv Gandhi’s vision and ideals. It was a moment of reflection and remembrance, underscoring the significance of his contributions to the country’s progress and development.

Respects were also paid to the former prime minister at the nation’s capital by other Congressmen, including P Chidambaram and Sachin Pilot.

In 1984, following the tragic assassination of his mother and then Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi assumed the leadership of the Congress party. Remarkably, at the youthful age of 40, he ascended to the office of India’s Prime Minister in October of the same year, becoming the nation’s youngest leader to hold such a prestigious position. This pivotal moment marked not only a transition in leadership but also ushered in a new era in Indian politics. Under Rajiv Gandhi’s stewardship, the country witnessed a blend of youthful energy and visionary governance, as he embarked on a journey to shape India’s destiny and lead it towards progress and prosperity.

Rajiv Gandhi served as India’s Prime Minister until December 2, 1989. Born on August 20, 1944, his life was tragically cut short when he was assassinated by a suicide bomber affiliated with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) during an election rally in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu, on May 21, 1991.
