Bharat Ratna: Narasimha Rao Garu’s stint as Prime Minister was distinguished by substantial steps that connected India to global markets, ushering in a new age of economic progress, the PM stated in a post on X. Former Prime Ministers Chaudhary Charan Singh, Narasimha Rao, and agricultural scientist MS Swaminathan were honored by the NDA-led BJP government with the Bharat Ratna award.
The declaration comes only days after 96-year-old BJP veteran LK Advani and two-time Bihar chief minister and socialist icon Karpoori Thakur (posthumously) received the highest civilian accolade. I am pleased to announce that our former Prime Minister, Shri PV Narasimha Rao Garu, will be awarded the Bharat Ratna. Narasimha Rao Garu, a renowned scholar and statesman, has served India extensively in diverse roles. He is also recognized for his contributions as Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Union Minister, and as a longstanding Member of Parliament and Legislative Assembly,” the Prime Minister stated in a post on X.

It is a great privilege for our government to bestow the Bharat Ratna upon the former Prime Minister of the country, Chaudhary Charan Singh. This honor is a tribute to his unparalleled contributions to the nation. He devoted his entire life to championing the rights and welfare of farmers. Nation-building was always his first priority, whether he was the country’s Home Minister, the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, or a member of the Legislative Assembly. He also steadfastly opposed the Emergency. His unwavering dedication to our farmer brethren and his commitment to democracy during the Emergency serve as a source of inspiration for the entire nation,” the Prime Minister expressed in a separate post.
Regarding MS Swaminathan, the Prime Minister remarked, In acknowledgment of his significant contributions to our nation’s agriculture and the welfare of farmers. He played a crucial role in guiding India towards self-sufficiency in agriculture during difficult periods and made remarkable efforts to modernize Indian agriculture. We also appreciate his invaluable contributions as an innovator and mentor, fostering learning and research among numerous students.
Having held a number of positions, PV Narasimha Rao is largely acknowledged for having started important economic reforms and appointed Manmohan Singh as Finance Minister in the midst of a difficult economic time. He died in 2004.
Often regarded as India’s agricultural hero, Chaudhary Charan Singh, the country’s fifth prime minister, established the Lokdal party in 1980.
Dr Swaminathan, the father of the green revolution, was instrumental in creating high-yielding wheat and rice varieties, which saved India from starvation in the 1960s.
