  • Police officers stationed outside the House of Representatives
  • Congress has called for a protest known as the “Chalo Secretariat.”

The sister of YSRCP leader and Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy, Andhra Pradesh Congress Chief YS Sharmila, spent the night at the Congress office to escape being placed under house arrest ahead of the ‘Chalo Secretariat’ demonstration at Vijayawada.

Sharmila wrote this in “x”: Will you try to put us under house arrest if we organize a protest on behalf of the unemployed? Don’t we possess the right to protest in a democracy? Isn’t it unfortunate that, as a woman, I have to stay away from the police and spend the night in the Congress party office to avoid being placed under house arrest?

“Are we terrorists… or deemed as anti-social elements? Their efforts to impede us are telling – they fear our influence. It’s a guise to conceal their ineptitude, the harsh reality they face. Yet, despite their attempts to halt us, to hinder our workers at every turn, or confine them with barricades, the fight for the unemployed will persist unyieldingly.

Today, YS Sharmila addressed the situation on X, highlighting the deployment of numerous police officials outside the Congress office in Vijayawada and the erection of barricades. She asserted that individuals within the office are effectively being held against their will, unable to exit freely. Additionally, she claimed that several party members had been detained by the police.

The Congress has called for a ‘Chalo Secretariat’ demonstration, urging the state administration to solve the issues confronting unemployed youths and students.

Sharmila, speaking to the media at Andhra Ratna Bhavan in Vijayawada, stated that the Andhra Pradesh government has failed to address critical issues concerning the young, the unemployed, and students over the last five years.

She expressed concern over the plight of a significant portion of unemployed youth who are forced to endure meager wages, noting that even graduates and postgraduates are subjected to such conditions. In a tragic turn, she mentioned instances where students have lost their lives due to these circumstances. According to a survey spanning the last five years, she revealed that a staggering 21,000 unemployed individuals have tragically taken their own lives.

Days after joining the Congress last month, YS Sharmila was named Andhra Pradesh’s Congress chief.
