Vishal Patil, an independent member of the Maharashtra Lok Sabha, met with Mallikarjun Kharge, the president of the Congress, on Thursday and offered his support for the party.

Mr. Patil, who was elected to the Lok Sabha from the Sangli seat, is the grandson of the former chief minister of Maharashtra Vasantdada Patil.

After the Shiv Sena-UBT was given the Sangli parliamentary seat as part of the Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition’s seat-sharing agreement, Mr. Patil, a former leader of the Congress, stood for office as an Independent.

In a recent post, Mr. Mallikarjun Kharge expressed his gratitude, stating, We warmly welcome the support of the elected MP from Sangli, Shri Vishal Patil (@patilvishalvp), to the Congress party.” Additionally, Patil also met former Congress presidents Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi.

The opposition INDIA bloc’s greatest number of seats, 99, was gained by the Congress in the just-ended Lok Sabha elections. 233 seats were won by the opposing coalition.

I couldn’t contest on a Congress ticket, but people voted for me considering the Congress ideology. I deeply admire this gesture. That’s why, after winning, I decided to extend my support to the Congress. Today, I’ve sent a letter of support to Mallikarjun Kharge. I also met Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi to seek their blessings. We will collaborate and work together, Mr. Patil told reporters.

AICC General Secretary K C Venugopal emphasized that the Congress has always had deep roots in Sangli, and it’s with this sentiment that Patil has extended his unconditional support to the party.

This is a truly fitting move that carries forward the legacy of Congress stalwart Vasantdada Patil ji, Mr. Venugopal remarked.

Mr. Patil is the son of Prakashbapu Patil, a 5th-term Congress Lok Sabha MP from Sangli. Prakashbapu passed away in 2005, and his son Pratik Patil won the Sangli seat in a by-poll.

Having recently declared his retirement from politics, Pratik, a union minister in the UPA government, allowed Vishal to take over.
