Telangana News: The deaths were reported, according to Telangana police, within 48 hours of the Intermediate Public Examination results being made public on Wednesday.

According to reports from PTI, seven students, two of whom were girls, reportedly took their own lives shortly after the Telangana state board announced the results of the Intermediate Public Examination 2024 for both the first (equivalent to Class 11) and second year (Class 12). Police stated that these tragic incidents occurred within the past 48 hours following the release of the results on Wednesday.

Instances were reported from Rajendranagar, located on the outskirts of Hyderabad, as well as from Khammam, Mahabubabad, and Kollur.

As per a report from The Indian Express, the initial incident occurred in Mancherial district, where a 16-year-old boy hanged himself at home. The student had not passed in four subjects.

The students who committed suicide were either 16 or 17 years old. According to the police, they ended their lives by hanging, jumping into a community well, or drowning in a pond.

Over 9.8 lakh students participated in the intermediate exam held earlier this year. Approximately 61.06% of students (2.87 lakh) passed in the first year (equivalent to Class 11), while the pass percentage was 69.46% (3.22 lakh) in the second year. 

In 2019, 22 students in Telangana died by suicide following the release of the intermediate results.

Telangana contributes to 5 percent of student suicides nationwide. According to the National Crime Records Bureau, the state ranked 11th among the 28 states in 2022. Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Madhya Pradesh were the top three states with the highest number of student suicides.
