During an upcoming visit to Bengaluru, the technology epicenter of the country, Microsoft Chief Executive Officer Satya Nadella will speak to developers and technologists about “discovering new opportunities with AI.” He will also engage with industry leaders in Mumbai to discuss the opportunities and challenges associated with next-generation AI.

Additionally, Google’s Chief Scientist, Jeff Dean, is scheduled to address researchers, developers, and startups in Bengaluru on the next frontier of AI. Following this, he will participate in a fireside chat focusing on India’s role in enabling AI to drive significant societal impact. The simultaneous engagements underscore the significance of India for both companies and the broader AI sector. With over 5 million programmers, India is increasingly becoming one of the most substantial reservoirs of AI talent for startups and global enterprises, particularly at a juncture when there is often a scarcity of AI expertise. During a tour of India last year, Nvidia Corp. CEO Jensen Huang expressed the view that the country could potentially become the world’s largest exporter of AI expertise.
“There is a global shift towards AI in the next five to ten years, and the Indian developer will be at the forefront of it,” stated Nandan Nilekani, Chairman of Infosys Ltd., Asia’s second-largest technology services firm. Nilekani emphasized, “The Indian developer will play a crucial role in determining which AI stack will emerge dominant,” alluding to the various layers of technologies that constitute competing AI systems. Both Nadella and Google CEO Sundar Pichai were raised in India and pursued their engineering studies there before continuing their education in the United States. The emphasis on AI represents a pivotal point in their careers. Pichai has characterized the move towards AI as “bigger than the internet,” while Nadella has referred to it as “Microsoft’s moment.”

As a testament to India’s increasing impact on AI, Ahmed Mazhari, President of Microsoft Asia, highlighted the noteworthy developer activity on GitHub, a platform owned by Microsoft for developers. He stated, “Currently, one in four AI projects on GitHub originates from India.” In a statement, Mazhari asserted, “By 2026, India is poised to surpass the US. The country is in a distinct position to facilitate the widespread adoption of AI, both domestically and in international markets.” Microsoft has recently unveiled plans to provide training for 100,000 developers in India on the latest AI technology and tools. In the previous year, Nasscom, India’s technology industry trade body, reported nearly half a million developers specializing in AI and data sciences.
Sangeeta Gupta, Senior Vice President of Nasscom, expressed optimism, stating, “It’s reasonable to anticipate an influx of more leading AI companies into India.” Gupta highlighted that major technology services firms like Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. and Infosys are actively accelerating their efforts in AI and are in the process of training hundreds of thousands of engineers. She emphasized, “Enterprises are eager to embrace AI, and developers play a crucial role in expediting this transition.”
