Hailing from Gujarat in 1875, Patel began his career as a lawyer and soon rose to prominence as a prominent Congress figure and a close associate of Mahatma Gandhi during the fight for independence.
With his combination of firmness and persuasion, he is credited as the first home minister of independent India, bringing hundreds of princely states into the Union.
