On Friday, the Congress announced Kishori Lal Sharma as its candidate from Amethi, where he will go head-to-head with BJP’s Smriti Irani.
Sharma, a trusted associate of the Gandhi family, boasts over four decades of unwavering commitment to the party. Hailing from Ludhiana in Punjab, He first ventured into Raebareli and Amethi alongside Rajiv Gandhi back in 1983.
His bond with the Gandhi family grew even stronger after the tragic demise of Rajiv Gandhi in May 1991, becoming more akin to family ties.
Sharma played a pivotal role as the main figure overseeing the two crucial constituencies during the Gandhis’ absence.
He made regular visits to both areas and notably accompanied Sonia Gandhi on her inaugural political visit to Amethi. It was widely acknowledged that He took charge of managing the Amethi and Raebareli constituencies after Sonia Gandhi relinquished Amethi for Rahul Gandhi and contested from Raebareli.
Sharma and Rahul Gandhi filed their nomination papers from Amethi and Raebareli, respectively, on Friday.
