In the presence of party president Mallikarjun Kharge and former chief Rahul Gandhi, YS Sharmila, sister of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, announced the formal merger of her party, YSR Telangana Party, into Congress today in New Delhi.
Sharmila expressed her delight at the consolidation of political forces while speaking to party workers and supporters at the AICC headquarters in the national capital.
Today, I am very happy to announce the merger of the YSR Telangana Party and the Congress Party. I am overjoyed that the YSR Telangana Party will now be a part of the Indian National Congress, she said.
The merger is seen as a strategic move aimed at strengthening the Congress party in Telangana and forging a united front ahead of the upcoming state elections.
YS Sharmila was a consistent supporter of the Congress party during the recent Telangana assembly elections.
“Because the Congress party has a chance of winning the Telangana Assembly elections, I am offering my support to them. During his nine years in office, KCR has not kept any of the promises he made to the public. And for that sole reason, I oppose KCR’s ascent to power. In a statement released prior to Congress’ eventual victory in the Telangana assembly elections, the YSR’s daughter stated, “I tend to pull the Congress vote bank, so I risk Congress’ chance.”
