Canada: On Friday, the Canadian High Commission in India wished India a happy 75th Republic Day. The message, shared on X (previously Twitter), conveyed warm greetings to India with the words, “Sending heartfelt wishes for a joyous Republic Day.” Canada in India posted the message in both Hindi and English.

The country’s message was released in response to rumors that Canada would look into claims of Indian meddling in its most recent two general elections, which were held in 2019 and 2021. Since the death of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, India and Canada have been embroiled in a diplomatic spat that has lasted for several months. Following Justin Trudeau’s claims on September 18 of a “potential” role for Indian agents in the June 18 killing of Khalistani terrorist Nijjar in British Columbia, Canada, the relationship between India and Canada became severely strained.

Trudeau’s accusations were dismissed by India as “absurd” and “motivated.” India classified Nijjar as a terrorist in 2020.

The strained relations between the two countries resulted in the expulsion of diplomats and the issuance of travel advisories. India stopped providing visa services to Canadian nationals on September 21. However, after an almost two-month hiatus, e-visa services for Canadians were resumed by India in November.
