CAA: Sources have informed LiveMint that the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) is anticipated to announce the regulations for the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) on Monday. Introduced by the Narendra Modi government in 2019, the CAA laws aim to enable eligible individuals to attain Indian citizenship.

The Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) provisions extend Indian citizenship to persecuted migrants belonging to non-Muslim communities, encompassing Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, Parsis, and Christians. These migrants originated from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan and entered India before December 31, 2014.

After the amendment of the Citizenship Act, India experienced significant protests in opposition to the change. To streamline the process of applying for citizenship under the CAA rules, an online portal has been developed, aiming to facilitate the entire procedure digitally, according to an official statement provided to the news agency ANI. This digital platform is expected to simplify and expedite the application process for eligible individuals seeking citizenship under the CAA provisions.

“The regulations are finalized, and an online portal is already operational for the entire process, which will be conducted digitally,” stated an official to ANI. Applicants will be required to disclose the year of their entry into India without the need for any travel documents. Furthermore, no additional documentation will be necessary from the applicants, streamlining the citizenship application process under the Citizenship (Amendment) Act rules. This approach aims to simplify and expedite the procedure for eligible individuals seeking Indian citizenship.
