Beginning on January 1, 2024, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Argentina, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia will become full members of the BRICS group, joining Brazil, Russia, China, India, and South Africa.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said this afternoon that the BRICS organization will extend invitations to six states to join as full members. According to Mr. Ramaphosa, these nations—Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Argentina, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia—will join South Africa, Brazil, India,Russia, China, and other members as of January 1 of the next year.

In Johannesburg, Mr. Ramaphosa declared, “We have consensus on the first phase of this BRICS expansion process. We have decided to invite the Argentine Republic, the Arab Republic of Egypt, the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates to become full members.”

“The membership will go into effect on January 1st, 2024,” he declared

“We value other countries’ interests in partnering with BRICS and have given our foreign ministers the task of further developing the BRICS partnership model and list of prospective countries (which want to join the grouping),” he stated.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is in Johannesburg for the BRICS Summit, welcomed all six nations after Mr. Ramaphosa’s statement and pledged to work with them to continue adding new members.

“I would want to use this opportunity to congratulate the leaders and people of these six countries and to welcome them to the BRICS. Each of these nations and India have strong, long-standing links, and I hope we will work together to usher in a new age of cooperation and prosperity.

Over 20 nations have already filed for full membership in the BRICS, which has been a main emphasis of this conference. China’s President Xi Jinping agreed with the necessity for development, adding, “We need to expedite the BRICS expansion process… to combine our knowledge and resources to improve the fairness and justice of world governance.
