Sonia Gandhi, who served as Congress president for nearly 22 years from 1998 to 2022, has been elected as a Member of Parliament to the Lok Sabha five times. Today, Sonia Gandhi, the Chairperson of the Congress Parliamentary Party, took a significant step by submitting her nomination for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections in Rajasthan. Accompanied by Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, she filed her nomination in Jaipur, marking a notable moment in her political journey.

The party is guaranteed to secure one Rajya Sabha seat from the state, marking the 77-year-old leader’s debut term in the Upper House after she served five terms as a Lok Sabha MP. Mrs. Gandhi, who served as the representative for Rae Bareli in the Lok Sabha, has opted not to participate in the forthcoming general elections. Her initial tenure as a Member of Parliament commenced in 1999 following her assumption of the Congress presidency.

In April, a total of 56 Rajya Sabha members from 15 states will retire, with elections for these seats scheduled for February 27. The deadline for nomination filings is February 15. is in a favorable position to secure one of the three Rajya Sabha seats from Rajasthan, slated for elections. This seat will become vacant once former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh completes his six-year tenure in April.

She will be the second member of the Gandhi family to join the Rajya Sabha, following former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, who served in the Upper House from August 1964 to February 1967.
