Recently, Chief Minister of Telangana, Mr. Revanth Reddy has explained about the operation of two lakh rupee farmer loan waiver scheme in the state under the Congress party’s election manifesto. The popular plan intended to ease the farmers’ finances has recently become a matter of controversy and debate among agricultural workers in the state.

Issues and Discontent Among Farmers

According to the scheme, they have put money directly in his/her bank account for three times. But after the policy was put forward there has been some issues that have come up concerning the well being of the beneficiaries. Some of the farmers using their ration cards, Aadhaar cards, and Pattadar passbooks for identification have expressed their problems including missing ration cards, errors in Aadhaar cards or wrong name recorded in flieds passbooks as some of the factors that have denied them the waiver.

Also, the farmers having taken loan above two lakh have not been benefitted from the waiver which has yielded more frustrations and protest. These farmers are calling for the abolition without any conditions and with no regard for the amount of loans granted extending the waiver to all.

Chief Minister’s Response and Assurances

In response to these concerns, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has provided clarity regarding the conditions of the waiver. He confirmed that the waiver applies to loans up to two lakh rupees, and if any portion of the loan exceeds this amount, it will be addressed under specific conditions. Revanth Reddy assured that the waiver is comprehensive and will include everyone who qualifies under the stipulated conditions.

He also highlighted that grievances have been filed with the Collectorates to address the issues faced by farmers who have not yet received their waivers. A list of those who have not benefited from the waiver should be provided to the Collectorate for resolution. To date, CM Revanth Reddy reported that approximately 17,933 crores have been deposited as part of the loan waiver scheme.

Criticism of Former Ministers KTR and Harish Rao

Amid these developments, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has also launched a scathing critique against former ministers KTR (K. T. Rama Rao) and Harish Rao, accusing them of undermining the loan waiver scheme and misleading farmers. Revanth Reddy pointed his finger at Harish Rao that he has threatened the loan waiver and backtracked on resignation if two lakh loan waiver was not done. The Chief Minister accused that BRS (Bharatiya Rashtra Samithi) leaders mislead the farmers in loan issue and caused confusion among the farmers and made them dissatisfied.

Recommendations for Addressing Loan Waiver Issues

In his critique, Revanth Reddy suggested that KTR should personally visit each farmer to gather detailed information about those who have not received their loan waivers. He recommended that this information be compiled, and be given to the Collectorate, as a way of reaching a resolution. The statement made by Revanth Reddy is to corner the BRS leadership to explain the difference and to explain the stand that has been taken for the farming community.

Political Implications and Ongoing Debate

The ongoing debate and the criticism from CM Revanth Reddy underscore the contentious nature of the loan waiver scheme and its implementation. The scheme was a key promise made by the Congress party during the elections, and its execution has been closely scrutinized. With significant sums already disbursed and numerous issues still unresolved, the political discourse surrounding the scheme continues to evolve. The Chief Minister’s efforts to clarify the conditions of the waiver and his criticisms of opposition figures highlight the intense political rivalry and the challenges of managing such large-scale welfare initiatives.

Looking Ahead

Therefore, the coming period will actually focus on the success of the loan waiver scheme and the future statements of the ruling and opposition parties. Stakeholders in the state will be particularly keen on the resolution of farmers’ grievances as well as political implications of these developments.
