Maharashtra’s public universities have decided to offer free education to transgender students as a way to support the state’s transgender population. The decision was made in response to the state government’s proposal to provide funding for transgender students’ academic pursuits.According to PTI, Higher and Technical Education Minister Chandrakant Patil requested that transgender students’ full tuition be covered by state universities out of their own funds during a meeting with vice-chancellors of those institutions.
By offering free education, the Maharashtra government is not only ensuring equal access to education but also acknowledging the unique needs and challenges faced by transgender students. In 2014, the Supreme Court declared transgender people to be a third gender. Following the decision, the CBSE and a few other state boards added transgender students as a separate category alongside male and female students. Many other state boards, however, are still awaiting’requests’ from transgender people to create a category for them.
Transgender children are identified as Socio-Economically Disadvantaged Groups (SEDGs) in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The Union government has urged all state and national education boards to provide transgender students with an equitable and high-quality education.
