Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla: The Speaker of the Lok Sabha to beLok Sabha Speaker

Lok Sabha Speaker: On June 26, Om Birla, a BJP leader, and NDA candidate, was elected as the Speaker of the 18th Lok Sabha after securing victory over K Suresh, the candidate put forward by the INDIA bloc, in a voice vote held in the House. Birla’s reelection marks a significant milestone, as he becomes the first Lok Sabha Speaker since Balram Jakhar in 1985 to serve two full terms.

Traditionally, the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the Lok Sabha are chosen through consensus between the ruling party and the opposition. However, this time, a lack of agreement between the two sides led to an election. Such elections for these positions have occurred only three times in history: in 1952, 1967, and 1976.

The process of electing the Speaker saw motions from both the NDA and INDIA alliance, a customary procedure where consensus between the ruling party and the opposition traditionally determines the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the Lok Sabha.

Om Birla, a veteran three-time MP from Kota, Rajasthan, previously held the position of Speaker in the 17th Lok Sabha. His opponent, K Suresh of the Congress party, boasts the distinction of being the longest-serving parliamentarian in the 18th Lok Sabha, having represented Kerala’s Mavelikara constituency for eight terms.

Who is Om Birla

Born in 1962, Om Birla serves as the Speaker of the 18th Lok Sabha. He became an MP for the second time in 2019 before being appointed Speaker, a role typically held by more senior leaders.

Birla entered politics in 1987 as the district president of the BJP’s youth wing in Kota. His electoral journey began in 2003 when he won the Kota assembly seat, continuing as a legislator in Rajasthan until 2014. He subsequently won his first Lok Sabha election from Kota-Bundi.
