The central has brought good news for the people of Andhra Pradesh as the Amaravati Railway Line project has been approved at last. Recently Union Cabinet has cleared the proposal for the construction of a 57-km railway line to improve connectivity to the capital region Amaravati. This project requires a budget of ₹ 2245 crore and it has the vision to provide better and faster structures in the region for travelling.
In this paper, we examine more carefully the main milestones and present attempts on the construction of Amaravati and how the railway project fits into the development of the capital.
Amaravati 2.0: Resuming the Capital’s Development
Despite the provisions being made by the Centre, the state government has now redoubled efforts to develop Amaravati with the new brand name of Amaravati 2.0. Following several years of inactivity on essential social infrastructure projects in the capital, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has recommenced work. Significantly, the G+7 building project for the Capital Region Development Authority (CRDA) in the villages of Lingayapalem and Uddandarainipalem within the Tullur mandal, which was launched in 2017 and ₹ 160 crore was initiated to the mandal, is now resumed.
The project, which was begun nearly seven years ago, has been restarted with promises that it will not be abandoned halfway through as was done before. The government has laid down timelines on these projects to fast-track the general development of the Amaravati area. The continuation of these infrastructure projects is now in consonance with developing Amaravati as a successful capital city.
New Amaravati Railway Line: Connectivity to Drive Progress
In the development activities, the central government has sanctioned to lay a new 57 km railway line that passes through Errupalem, Amaravati and Nambur. This new railway line would also be seen to relieve transport because it connects the capital region to other regions in the state. The state government’s launch and the Modi government sanction of a whopping ₹2,245 crore for the project reflects the significance attached to enhancing connectivity to Amaravati — a crucial component to its development and interconnection with the other regions in Andhra Pradesh.
For the project, the Indian Railways is already gearing up and the ongoing process of land acquisition has also started, mainly in the area between Errupalem, Amaravati, and Nambur. A new line will therefore come in handy to address the daily traffic needs of people who have to shuttle between their homes and Amaravati for business, work, or government duty.
Land Acquisition in Full Swing for the Railway Project
The general planning and success of operations involved in the railway project hinge a great deal on the efficiency of land acquisition. It has so far received notification for acquiring land in 97 villages in the Guntur district alone for the Railways Department. By this step, therefore, there is hope that the process of acquiring the land for the implementation of these projects will gather pace in the next few weeks. To this end, railway authorities have made consultations with landowners to avoid time wastage during the construction phase due to the delays in the acquisition of the land.
Not only Amaravati city but also the upcoming new rail route will have access to various nearby areas as well as the new economic opportunity for the surrounding villages, nor was it sufficiently developed. This connectedness will also allow the free flow of people and goods thus boosting the development potential of the region.
Impact of the Railway Line on Amaravati’s Growth
The sanction and subsequent building of the Amaravati Railway Line are important events within a larger vision of making Amaravati a functional capital. Better transport infrastructure is also going to result in more businesses, investors, and population setting up base in the area. Upon completion of construction, the railway track will dominate as essential transport when individuals will be transporting themselves to, and within, Amaravati for work or other activities.
Furthermore, it can be noted that the proposed railway project can be in consonance with the newly emerged policy of the state government to provide adequate infrastructure facilities to Amaravati which wants to develop as an iconic capital covering all necessary and desired amenities and linkages. It will also support other current development projects in Amaravati like the government administrative offices, educational facilities and business establishments.
Conclusion
Amaravati Railway Line approval can demonstrate the current Union Government combined with the state government awareness towards the development of Amaravati as the capital of Andhra Pradesh. The outlay of ₹ 2245 crore for the project represents a large sum of money to address the challenge posed by lack of connectivity and improving transport systems. Since the process of possession of the land that is required for the railway is already being initiated and the construction works are being accelerated, the railway project is just another milestone towards linking Amaravati with the rest of the state.
The recent efforts made by the state government to take up the development of Amaravati from the scratch under the ‘Amaravati 2.0’ has again re-emphasised the role that infrastructure projects such as the railway line, to play in the new development plan of the capital city. The new rail route will help the capital grow as well as bring economic development to the region.
