Wrestler Vinesh Phogat has secured a victory, as the BJP heads towards claiming power

Jewel in the crown wrestling wrestler Vinesh Phogat won the election he became the winner of the Jhulna Assembly Constituency in Haryana state. Challenging as a Congress candidate, Phogat defeated the BJP’s Yogesh Kumar. This win has come at a time when the electoral map is shifting, and the BJP aims for the third term in Haryana.

Election Results Overview

Till now the current trends suggest that the BJP is comfortably placed in 48 out of the 90 assembly seats in Haryana while Congress trailing behind 36 and other 6 candidates seats. The fight between the BJP and the Congress is still a neck-and-neck one and the leads are coming in as the day progresses. Like many other political hopefuls, Phogat had his fair share of highs and lows in the election; he had an early lead and then suffered a middle slump before clinching a win again.

Leading Candidates and Key Contests

In the larger electoral picture, the CM candidate of Haryana Nayab Saini is being polled from Ladwa and is in a very leading position currently. Another Congress heavyweight who is leading comfortably is former Chief Minister Bhupendra Singh Hooda who leads by 36 thousand votes after the seventh round of the counting.

In Haryana, to install a government a party or a coalition needs a minimum of 46 supporters in the house. Much as the BJP seems set to breach this magic figure easily, the electoral politics remains cut throat with keen contests being witnessed across many constituencies.

Allegations of Election Irregularities

While it is many people are rejoicing in Phogat’s victory, Congress leaders have questioned the credibility of the elections. Holding similar views as Ramesh Jairam of Congress questioned the trends being published on the ECI’s website and said that like in the case of the Lok sabha poll, there may be fudging in Haryana election results too. He raised doubts about the influence that the BJP was plotting to impose on the electoral body to change the result as he threatened to report the matter to the Electoral Commission.

Another Congress leader, Pawan Khera, spoke in a similar way to Ramesh, pointing to a disconnect between counting and the timing of results. The fear associated with the conduct of elections has led to discussions on the level of probity and free electoral practices in the course of the election.

Election Commission’s Response

Some Congress leaders have accused the ECI of manipulation of the election counting thereby discouraging the credibility of the announcement made by the independent electronic counting agency. ECI insisted that the counting was done properly and in an open and civic supervision by candidates. They noted that no complaints have been made to any of the counting centers regarding anomalies or some form of malfeasance in the counting exercise.

The comments made by the ECI were to calm the polity and the political actors that the electoral processes had not been biased. Usurping the authenticity of the counting procedures, the Commission aimed at dispelling claims from the opposition political parties about emplaced biases or regulations in the results of the election.

Conclusion

Vinesh Phogat‘s win in Jhulana Assembly Constituency marks a great success in a competitive electoral system. Since BJP is all set to continue its government in Haryana this election has had far-reaching consequences as far as Haryana assembly constituencies are concerned. Over the period, counting will go on and outcomes will be declared, the nature of the contest that emerged between the two major entities will be interesting in framing the future of Haryana’s governance.

Lodged by Congress, the allegations are part of a general distrust of the electoral process in India which led the Election Commission to restate its commitment to a clean electoral process. In the course of the development of this situation, it will be necessary for all the parties concerned to achieve the stability of democracy to guarantee the fairness of the Haryana government.
